The Mathematics Olympiad Club is for people who are intrigued with problem-solving or want to sharpen their skills in mathematics. This club is relatively new to our school and has already become famous among students who want to know more than what is taught in the classrooms.
It all started in the fall of 2022 when Mr. George Mchedlishvili held extra math classes for students. “These were just additional classes—once or twice a week—for those who wanted to deepen their math knowledge and participate in the Olympiads,” he explained.
In August 2023, current senior Anamaria Kand had the idea to turn these sessions into what is now called the Mathematics Olympiad Club. Anamaria suggested to help Mr. Mchedlishvili and co-teach this club with him. The Math Club officially opened this academic year.
The club meets every Monday and Thursday, together with freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and sometimes with a few seniors. Around 20 students attend to work on problems and share ideas.
“At first, the teacher gives us a problem and some time to solve it or think about it on our own. After, we discuss it together on the board,” one student said.
The Math Club's involvement in competitions is one of its most important parts. Members take part in Olympiads like Kings, International STEM, and KomaroviSTEM. “Of course, we actively participate in all sorts of Olympiads and competitions,” Mr. Mchedlishvili said. "What is really great is that the students generously share the important information about different competitions with their peers," he said.
Although there are many reasons why students join the Math Club, their passion for math and desire to get better are the most common. “I joined the math club because I love math and I want to be great at it,” Nene Nikoladze shared. “The club has helped me better understand different concepts of math.” Others join for the chance to learn about new ideas. “I get to learn a lot of material not taught during the lessons,” said Ana Lobzhanidze. The club has also helped students develop better habits: "This club taught me how to solve problems using simpler methods." Students think that the Math Club is great for anyone who enjoys math or wants to improve their skills. Members of the club think it is extremely organized and does not require any changes.
